Elvis' House, June 2005

Not that we actually planned it that way, but we found ourselves
spending the night in Tupelo, Mississippi. In the morning, we
awoke to find that Tupelo was much bigger than I thought, and
that the house Elvis was born in was just a 5 minute drive from our
hotel. Who could resist?

Before Elvis was born, his father borrowed $180 to build the
house. Not long after Elvis was born, his father could not afford
to make payments on that $180 loan, and so the house was
repossessed. That is when the Presleys moved to Memphis.
Kelso Family Reunion

April 15, 2006 - Kelso Family Reunion in Dowling Park, Florida.

For the past 11 years, the Kelso family have been gathering in the Advent Christian Village at Dowling Park to celebrate their family. Since I moved to Florida, my Great Aunt Grace (who married my grandmother's younger brother) has been gracious enough to invite my family to the reunions. This was the first year we were able to go, convinced by my need to spend a little time with my grandmother.

We drove up to Dowling Park on Friday after Layle got out of work; we left West Palm Beach at 4:00 and arrived at the lodge at almost exactly 9:30 pm. We were introduced to those who were there (Grace, Robert, John, Tammy, Kenneth, Keith, etc.)

Saturday we enjoyed our morning walk along the Suwanee with Nana. More people arrived during the day, most of them younger members of the families. I did my best to remember names and faces, but it seemed an impossible task. In the afternoon, two people I had not seen in seventeen years showed up. Uncle Tim and Aunt Verna, from my father's side of the family arrived.

During my conversations with Uncle Tim, Verna and Nana, I discovered that the Advent Christian Village, the Kelso family, the Hall family and the Knox family all had much more in common than I ever thought possible.

In '38 or '39 Nana came to the village (at that time an orphanage) to tutor some children who had been unable to progress out of their school grade level. Nana was there for that summer. Shortly after she left, Aunt Verna's mother became house parent to one of the houses. Her grandfather, whom I believe was one of the investors in the property, also built, helped build or caused to be built many of the buildings around us. The entire reunion group stayed in Walker Cottage, which is named in memory of her grandfather "Wee Willie Walker".

Nana returned after a brief interval, and spent some time there as house parent while Papa was a house parent in the boy's dormitory. (Verna's mother was not there at this point, although Nana did meet and still remembers quite well some of her family.)

In the '60's Uncle Tim and Aunt Verna spent some time at the village.

In the '90's the Kelso family began having their reunion at the village

Within the last couple of years, Tim and Verna returned to Dowling Park to care for Verna's mother and father. Unfortunately her mother passed away last year. They both work at the Village now, and they live on 8 acres of land about 1.5 miles from where we stayed.

In 2007, we all met there. Kelso's, Knox's and others.

Elena's Karate Album

This album contains most of the pictures we've taken while watching Elena perform at various karate tournaments. Each sub-album is a specific tournament.

The picture for the cover of this album is of Elena talking with Grand Master Sun Ho Lee. As the Grand Master, he is the only 10th degree black belt in Songham Tae Kwan Do, and he is the effective CEO of the American Tae Kwan Do Association (ATA). As we were leaving the tournament (held in Disney's Wide World of Sports), Elena saw him walking back into the building. While all others around were simply staring at him, Elena quickly snapped to attention, waited until he looked her way, and then executed a very crisp and respectful bow. He noticed her and quickly came to talk to her (he has since seen her at numerous tournaments and always seems to smile a little brighter with just a hint of recognition in his eyes.) He talked to her for some time (to the chagrine of his escort - behind in the red suit) while hundreds gathered round. After talking to her, he autographed her trophies and then went into the building. The rest of the crowd had to follow and then wait in line to get their autographs. It was the highlight of that tournament year for Elena, because she was held as an example of how to show proper respect to the Grand Master.

In March of 2006, Keith, Donna, Kamela, Erik and Morgan all came for a visit. Among the highlights of that visit was a visit to the Kennedy Space Center. I even got to meet and talk (briefly) to the pilot of Apollo 15 mission Al Worden.
